The CASE Library has developed a resource collection on advancement in independent schools. The collection offers information on general trends, advancement, alumni and parent engagement, communications and marketing, and fundraising. This collection also includes a guide to all the CASE Library's sample collections that feature sections for independent schools samples. The Advancement Resource Catalog is the Library's database of 15,000+ item records (including articles, books, and white papers) available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This sample collection includes material on parent councils, such as brochures, applications and role expectations, as well as material on parent giving campaigns, parent newsletters, parent welcome and orientation guides and material specifically for parents of international students.

Advancement professionals are diligently focusing on DEIB initiatives within their teams.  And more and more of them are beginning to look outward as well. Two advancement professionals with wide experience working in the DEIB space offer practical strategies to more effectively identify, involve, solicit, and steward alumni of color.

Although more than two decades have passed since Claire Matern attended Zurich International School, she can still remember the warm embrace she felt as a newly transplanted second-grader from Brooklyn, New York.

"I got sung the song and I sang the song [to others]," Matern says of the welcome anthem serenaded to all newbies during school assemblies. "It was a nice indication that you're one of us. And when you left, everyone sang ‘Happy Trails,' which was so touching."

That Matern still recalls those details despite attending ZIS for just three years is an outcome any international school would welcome, too.

International schools typically follow a national or international curriculum different from the host country. They educate a highly transient, multinational, and multilingual student population for global citizenship. Since 2000, the K-12 international school market has tripled, as more wealthy local families seek the Westernized education and career opportunities that come from it for their children.

Anniversary celebrations can dazzle at any budget. Scaling ideas to work at any institution, with any size staff, is a dance between dreaming big and drilling down to what’s doable. 

As millennials send their kids to school, they're fiercely rewriting the playbook on engagement and outreach for independent institutions.

In October 2014, Carol B. walked her Lovett School kindergartener to his classroom and then delivered a $2,500 check to the advancement office for True Blue, the school's annual fund. The following spring she made a sizable endowment contribution.
